The International Student Office held an orientation at Surugadai Campus Academy Common on October 16 to mark the launch of the language exchange program. This program has been newly established at all campuses since this academic year, with the aim of allowing Japanese and foreign students to teach each other their native languages, improve their foreign language conversation skills, and deepen cross-cultural understanding. This semester, 451 students applied for this program, and 326 students were successfully paired (grouped) based on matching preferences for language, campus, and other factors.

The orientation at Surugadai Campus served as the first meeting for students with their pre-matched partners, with approximately 60 students participating. At the beginning, an icebreaker session was held that also served as an opportunity for students to introduce themselves, and smiles gradually appeared on the faces of the students who had been nervous. After that, the administrative office explained the program and introduced tips for language exchange, which the participating students listened to with keen interest.

One of the pairs who took part in the orientation expressed their anticipation: “I think this will be a valuable period to gradually learn German through conversation with my partner before my planned study abroad in Germany,” and “In Germany, I studied a little Japanese using apps, but I would be happy if I could learn everyday conversation from my partner. I hope we can learn from each other.”

The matched pairs are scheduled to continue language exchange and cross-cultural communication at their own pace until the end of January next year.

An official from the International Student Office explained the program’s objectives: “We would like participants to learn from each other by discovering the culture of their partner country while also teaching about their own culture. We also hope that this program will help them rediscover the positive aspects of their own culture that they may not have realized before. We would be delighted if more students developed an interest in overseas cultures through international exchanges on campus.

°µÍø½ûÇø will continue to actively provide opportunities for students to engage in international exchange on campus.
