[School of Interdisciplinary Mathematical Sciences] KOHIRA, SENDA, KASAHARA, FUJISAWA, and Prof. MIYASHITA Homei receive the EC2025 Interactive Presentation Award
Sep. 30, 2025
“AromaSynth: a smell medium that adds various aromas to beverages” by KOHIRA Otone (4th-year student) and SENDA Chika (4th-year student) in the Department of Frontier Media Science at the School of Interdisciplinary Mathematical Sciences, KASAHARA Nobuhito (2nd-year pre-doctoral student) and FUJISAWA Hidehiko (1st-year pre-doctoral student) in the Frontier Media Science Program at the Graduate School of Advanced Mathematical Sciences, Asahi Soft Drinks Co., Ltd., Asahi Group Japan, Ltd., Professor MIYASHITA Homei, and others received the Interactive Presentation Award at Entertainment Computing 2025 (EC2025) held at Nihon University from August 25 to 27, 2025. The Interactive Presentation Award is an award given to an excellent research presentation in demonstrations and poster presentations based on a vote by participants.
In the research, the authors developed AromaSynth, a system that changes the taste of specific beverages in a variety of ways by manipulating only aromas. A new flavor can be produced by dropping precisely prepared perfumes in a base beverage that has few flavor characteristics.
AromaSynth is loaded with up to 20 perfumes and is controlled through a smartphone app. You can mix aromas by moving the slider on the screen, and save and share your recipes by using QR codes. In the demonstration held at an attached sponsor booth of Asahi Group Japan, Ltd., an attempt was made to express the flavor of Geisha high-grade coffee by adding aromas to base coffee. Visitors who experienced the taste comparison said that they were surprised that the taste had changed, and a discussion was held about the effect of aroma on flavor and the applicability of the system.
