In this seminar, we will study the history and art of cinema. In the first semester, we will begin with the study of basic film concepts and vocabulary, reading selections from Film Art: An Introduction and watching a variety of Japanese-language and English-language films. In the second semester, we will continue to apply what we have learned to a new set of films and readings. The third and fourth semester will be focused on writing the senior thesis. The class is taught in English, but films will be in Japanese or have Japanese subtitles, and we will use a mix of English and Japanese in class.

Recent thesis topics have included: "Kimi no na wa and Film Tourism in Gifu Prefecture," "The Ideal Way to Translate Humor Through Subtitles," and "Repeat Customers: Why and How Audiences Watch Uta no Prince-Sama Many Times." Some students have also done creative projects (writing music for a film, creating their own short film) and have written their senior thesis about that creative process. I'm very flexible about your topic!

We have a lot of fun in this seminar! My goal is for you to learn how to see movies in a new way. I also try to find interesting museum exhibits and film-related events for us to visit. Our classes are a mix of discussion, presentations, short videos, and writing practice. I'm very flexible about your thesis topics and final projects/writing assignments--I want you to choose topics that are interesting to you. Attendance is very important, though--if you want to participate, please be sure that you will be able to attend classes regularly!
