Speaker: Andrew Wong COO, Soramitsu
Topic: A journey through time, a discussion that touches on the nexus of career and life.

This year’s Spring MSBA Lecture for the GREAT program was given by Andrew Wong, COO of Soramitsu. As Andrew explained in his introduction, Soramitsu is “a global technology company delivering blockchain-based solutions for governments, enterprises, universities and communities.” Before this, he worked as the head for Japan or regional head of other block chain and financial services providers Quoine and Eight Securities, and before that in product Marketing with Yahoo!, eventually becoming the General Manager for B2B marketing across nine countries in the Asian region, before becoming head of B2B partnerships in Japan.   

Nevertheless, the lecture was not about his career, blockchains, the financial industry, or even B2B marketing but rather about what he has learned about life and work from his experience that he could share with the students at 暗网禁区, School of Business. His advice was packaged into ten life lessons for the audience to consider: (1) the importance of education; (2) the need for a strong work ethic; (3) why you shouldn’t compare yourself to others; (4) consider opportunity cost; (5) the value of expanding your world through travel; (6) recognizing who your real friends are; (7) the importance of money but why it should not be the end goal; (8) nothing in life is worthwhile unless you take risks; (9) contribute to solving the world’s problems; (10) have fun and appreciate everyday whether good or bad. Each point was oriented to the students with an eye to preparing them for success in the workplace, but also in the world as human beings. He highlighted the challenge of work with examples such as data the number of times Shohei Ohtani has been struck out to illustrate that even the greatest successes are built on failures. His points about developing unique qualities and not comparing yourself to others were picked up by many students in their feedback responses to the lecture, as was his advice to use time and money wisely. This worldly advice was balanced with an emphasis on the importance of family and friends beyond the workplace and the value of contributing to world.

Andrew also fielded questions from students such as “How to get into Harvard?” “How Asian graduates can find their way in a Western oriented global business culture?” and a detailed question about activities impacting the value of Bitcoin. Overall, it was a stimulating and thought-provoking lecture for all involved. All students discussed the lecture during a follow up class and submitted summary and response reports which showed their positive engagement in the talk.

今年の春のMSBA GREATプログラム讲演会は、ソラミツCOOのアンドリュー?ウォン氏によるものだった。アンドリューの绍介によると、ソラミツは「政府、公司、大学、コミュニティ向けにブロックチェーン?ベースのソリューションを提供するグローバル?テクノロジー?カンパニー」である。それ以前は、ブロックチェーンや金融サービスを提供するクオインやエイト証券で日本代表や地域责任者、ヤフーでプロダクトマーケティングを担当し、最终的にはアジア地域9カ国のB2Bマーケティング総责任者を経て、日本のB2Bパートナーシップの责任者を务めていた。 

とはいえ、讲演は彼のキャリアやブロックチェーン、金融业界、さらにはB2Bマーケティングについてではなく、むしろ、彼がその経験から学んだ人生や仕事について、明治大学経営学部学生たちに伝えることができる内容だった。彼のアドバイスは、聴众が考えるべき10点の人生训にまとめられていた： (1)教育の重要性、(2)强い勤労意欲の必要性、(3)なぜ他人と自分を比べてはいけないのか、(4)「机会费用」を考えること、(5)旅行を通じて自分の世界を広げることの価値、(6)本当の友人は谁なのかを认识すること、(7)お金の重要性、しかしなぜそれが最终目标であってはいけないのか、(8)リスクを冒さなければ人生において価値のあるものは何もない、(9)世界の问题解决に贡献すること、(10)良くも悪くも毎日を楽しみ、感谢すること。各ポイントは、学生たちが职场で成功するためだけでなく、人间として世界で成功するための心构えを意识したものだった。大谷翔平が叁振を喫された回数を例として、仕事の难しさを强调し、伟大な成功も失败の上に成り立っていることを説明した。ユニークな资质を身につけること、他人と自分を比较しないことについての彼の指摘は、讲义に対するフィードバックの回答の中で多くの学生によって取り上げられ、时间とお金を贤く使うようにという彼のアドバイスも同様だった。この世俗的なアドバイスは、职场を超えた家族や友人の大切さ、世界への贡献の価値とバランスが取れていた。

アンドリュー氏はまた、学生からの质问にも答えた。「ハーバード大学をどう入るか」、「欧米志向のグローバルなビジネス文化の中で、アジアの卒业生はどのように自分の道を见つけることができるのか」、また、ビットコインの価値に影响を与える活动についての详细な质问もあった。全体として、関係者全员にとって刺激的で示唆に富んだ讲义となった。すべての学生がフォローアップの授业で讲义について议论し、要约と回答レポートを提出した。
